Raising awareness of multilingualism as lived – in the context of teaching English as a foreign language
2020
Tässä artikkelissa esitellään mahdollisuuksia herätellä kielen oppijoiden kieli- ja kulttuuritietoisuutta. Esitellyt mahdollisuudet pohjautuvat 24 empiirisen tutkimuksen kriittiseen arviointiin. Tutkimuksissa käytettiin kuvataiteisiin pohjautuvia visuaalisia menetelmiä. Tällaisten menetelmien avulla on mahdollista pohtia aikaisempia kokemuksia tai kuvitella tulevaisuutta ja näin reflektoida erilaisia monikielisyyden kokemuksia. Näitä voivat olla identiteetin rakentumiseen liittyvät kysymykset, käsitykset eri kielten käytöstä tai tulevaisuuden unelmat. Arviointimme perusteella esitämme, että niitä tehtäviä, joita käytettiin tutkimuksissa, voidaan soveltaa eri tavoin erilaisille vieraan kiele…

Teachers’ initial training in cultural diversity in Spain: attitudes and pedagogical strategies
2005
This paper examines a number of issues relating to educational responsibility for increasing social cohesion and preventing the segregation of people from different cultures who have to pass through the Spanish educational system. Using a descriptive analysis, we review the present situation. Our review shows that the treatment of cultural diversity by Spanish universities is, in general, insufficient with respect to the training needs that students will demand from the educational system both now and in the future. Simply taking a single course on intercultural issues is not enough to prepare teachers to cope with cultural diversity in the school and classroom. Therefore, educational appro…

Decolonizing Othello in search of black feminist North American identities: Djanet Sears' Harlem duet and Toni Morrison's Desdemona
2017

The plays Harlem duet (1997) by African Canadian playwright Djanet Sears and Desdemona (2012) by Toni Morrison signify upon European texts aiming to carve out a new definition of what it means to be black in North America. Therefore both texts make for interesting reading in the study of (black) identity construction within US and Canadian contexts for, by revising Shakespeare’s Othello, they rethink and rewrite a social and racial reality unrelentingly disrupted by difference and hybridity. Sears’ play establishes a specific reading of Canadianness in dialogue with African America to erect a possibility of healing and …

Cultures in Dialogue: Perceptions and Experiences of Finnish Teachers of Transnational Dances
2012
This article is based on a phenomenographic study that focuses on identifying the pedagogical conceptions of Finnish teachers of transnational dances. The purpose is to uncover and understand teachers' conceptions concerning the implications of the cultural contexts of their specific dance forms for their pedagogical practices. Through a process of phenomenographic data analysis, the authors have identified three different ways to understand teachers' conceptions and experiences: (1) Dance as a path towards personal expression, (2) Telling a story of being a woman through dance, and (3) Self-approval and the collective nature of dance. The study aims at facilitating discussion about the pro…

Gender-separate education, understood as a pedagogical model that provides separate schooling for boys and girls, has been subject to legal and public scrutiny for the past thirty years. Nonetheless, it has not been until 2018 that this educational option was put into the spotlight, especially regarding its constitutionality and compatibility with arts. 1.1, 9.2 and 14 of the Spanish Constitution, which constitute a manifestation of the principles of equality and non-discrimination, while at the same time trying to balance it with art. 27 of said constitutional text, with respect to the right to education and freedom to choose and create educational centers.
